Founded in 1128 in Jerusalem, the Teutonic order is the third great order of religious and military chivalry resulting from the Crusades. The first knights of this order were called Brother of Ste-Marie and their primary vocation was the relief of sick or wounded Crusaders, before being reorganized in 1190 into a military order. This revival submitted the knights both to the rule of the Hospitallers but also to that of the Templars.
